  • Food- my specialty

What food would you say is your specialty?

Though I don’t consider myself a specialist in cooking, I am definitely more of a foodie who loves indulging in scrumptious dishes. However, there’s one dish I’m particularly proud of—my Dry Chilly Chicken. The recipe is quite simple, using local ingredients like Sirarakhong hathei (a local red chilly), garlic, salt, fermented bamboo shoot water, chicken, and rice bran oil. That’s it! To elevate the flavors, I top it off with fresh local herbs. It’s a dish that truly brings out the best of these simple ingredients.

  • The Yumyum Kitchen

The authentic local cuisine I experienced years ago was undoubtedly the best I have ever had. This came after almost a year of posting in the outskirts of the state, where accessing daily necessities was a challenge, let alone finding cafes, restaurants, or even decent hotels. After such a long and exhausting period, dining out and enjoying a good meal was truly a pleasure.

My friend (who is like a sister to me) and I decided to explore nearby restaurants/ cafes or kitchens after discovering one on Instagram. It was a cozy yet authentic eatery offering both traditional local dishes and Westernized versions of regional cuisine. Upon entering, we were greeted with warm hospitality, despite our casual attire.

We ordered with a mix of skepticism and excitement. When the food arrived and we began to Savor it, we were overjoyed—it was perfectly to our taste, prompting us to order another round. Unlike the sophisticated, high-end restaurants or hotels found in metropolitan areas, this was a charming, homestyle restaurant reminiscent of a mother’s kitchen, serving food straight from the pot.

We enjoyed a local-style chicken broth or stew (I called it) with sesame seeds and pork cooked with regional chili powder unique to the community. Although the dishes might seem simple, they require much patience and care, as they are simmered over low heat for hours. The meals were enhanced with local herbs and spices that tantalized our taste buds with their aromatic scent. We also had a bowl of King chili chutney with Ngari (fermented fish native to our home state), boiled vegetables with a pinch of salt, a bottle of Lager for her, and a soda for me.

It was an incredibly satisfying brunch after what felt like an eternity. We longed to return to this place and became regular customers whenever we were in town.

  • Neither chilly nor humid weather

What is your favorite type of weather?

A serene monsoon evening spent by the fireside, relishing freshly roasted sweet corn or maize with cherished loved ones, is indeed a delightful moment to treasure. However, if I were to choose a favorite season, it would undoubtedly be spring, when vibrant flowers bloom and melodious bird songs fill the air. Moreover, during this time of the year, an array of local products from Mother Nature’s bounty enriches the experience. The weather is pleasantly temperate, neither oppressively humid nor bitterly cold, allowing for the freedom to wear clothing of one’s choice.

  • Cosmetic stores to thrift to fish market

Where would you go on a shopping spree?

Oh my is this question for me? Was just thinking about it? Embarking on a vibrant day, I’d first immerse myself in the allure of cosmetic shopping, indulging in the quest for sunscreen and rejuvenating essentials. Then, weaving through the thrift store’s treasures, I’d cherry-pick some stylish shirts before succumbing to the irresistible allure of a local fish market, where the promise of a delightful fish fry awaits, satisfying both my cravings and the essence of a well-rounded day.

  • What was my favourite drink in the past?

    What is your favorite drink?

My favorite drink could be a mango shake. I am not as fond of drinks as I used to be in the past, where I was crazy about a soft drink from a cola company. I would consume it instead of water and could go without eating food. However, over the years, I have shifted towards healthier drinks. Coffee is something I seldom drink, and fermented fruit juices are drinks I indulge in once in a blue moon.

  • My all time favorite candy

    Daily writing prompt
    What’s your favorite candy?

To be blunt, I rarely have favorites of anything as my preferences change over time. When it comes to candy, I don’t have a specific favorite as I’m not particularly fond of it. However, if I recall correctly, during my childhood, I used to like the orange candy that cost 50 paise per piece. I enjoyed the smell and flavors, and it was shaped like a piece of an orange. That was one of my long-time favorite candies.

As for now, I’m not fond of any specific candy. If I were to pick one for myself, I might choose Imli or lemon-flavored candy.

  • The best day of life!

    Daily writing prompt
Describe your most ideal day from beginning to end.

The most ideal day, unfortunately, remains a privilege I have yet to experience. Nevertheless, I envision my ideal day as one filled with laughter, good food, and the presence of my loved ones, enjoying each other’s company. It’s a day where we embark on travels to new places, away from the distractions of social media, fully immersed in the joy of our shared moments.

In this ideal day, love and joy prevail, making every moment spent together special. It’s a day where we share stories and create memories, appreciating the unfolding tapestry of life. This, in my vision, would truly be the best day of my life.

  • Spicy fried chicken

    Daily writing prompt
What’s your favorite thing to cook?

One of my favorite dishes to cook is spicy fried chicken with local chili powder and salt. Occasionally, I enhance the taste with garlic and ginger paste. Here’s how I usually prepare it:

    1. Begin by boiling the chicken for about half an hour with a dash of salt and some herbs like basil, spring onion leaves, and chives roots.
    2. After boiling, separate the fleshy and bony parts. The fleshy parts can be set aside for further cooking.
    3. For the bony parts, add a bit more salt to taste and continue cooking. Alternatively, you can fry them together with the flesh. However, I prefer boiling to create a flavorful gravy that I can enjoy.
    4. Now, for the remaining fleshy part, heat and fry it with chili flakes and garlic-ginger paste. You can opt to fry it with just salt and chili as well.

This simple recipe allows for variations in the level of spiciness and the use of herbs for added flavor. Enjoy your spicy fried chicken!

  • One quirky eating habit of my family!

    Bloganuary writing prompt
Write about a few of your favorite family traditions.

While it might not appear realistic to others, our family has a unique and somewhat whimsical tradition when it comes to our eating habits, particularly with Chicken or duck curry. Regardless of the style or cuisine, my mom consistently reserves the bottom or tail part of the chicken for herself. The gizzard with the intestine is exclusively served to my dad, unless, of course, he’s in the mood to share with the rest of us.

This tradition holds a special significance for us, and when all the siblings are present, a specific allocation is made. The drumsticks find their way to the two younger sisters, while the wings are designated for my brother and me. The reasoning behind this division remains unclear to me. Perhaps it’s an inadvertent way to ensure that each family member receives a portion of meat in accordance with our age differences, or maybe it’s simply a quirky tradition that has evolved over time.

Regardless of its origins, I’ve grown accustomed to and, in a way, developed a fondness for this practice. There are moments, however, when I can’t help but envy my dad for consistently enjoying what is arguably the best part of the meal.

  • What I eat …

    Daily writing prompt
What snack would you eat right now?

I usually avoid snacks or fruits and prefer sustaining myself throughout the day with water and substantial meals, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It’s a habit of mine to enjoy meals comprising rice paired with either vegetable or non-vegetarian curries. Occasionally, I do indulge in cravings, especially for sinju, a Manipuri mixed vegetable salad with fermented fish, or some occasional treats like chips or churros. However, I am a big fan of chicken-based dishes, particularly those from popular establishments like KFC and Chicking.

So, right now I would not like to eat anything, Or may be I may like to eat some sinju if my friends are with me. Else I don’t crave for anything right now.
